In 1942 Rose Bellerue started La Crosse Day Nursery to care for kids of working Moms during World War II. The League of Women Voters served as the very first Board of Directors. La Crosse Day Nursery later became La Crosse Day Care Centers with locations in north and south La Crosse, Onalaska, Holmen, and West Salem. In 2011, because of the diversity in locations, La Crosse Day Care Centers identified the need to change their name to Childfirst.
Childfirst is dedicated to offering a secure and safe learning environment in which children can grow and develop. Our experienced and educated teachers provide a warm, nurturing, educational environment, stimulating each child’s desire to learn. We strive to exceed the expectations of working families by providing affordable, quality care.
Our Purpose is to help young children learn, grow, and feel good about themselves. We can do this best by giving them a variety of opportunities:
Our teachers are degreed professionals who care deeply about making your child’s educational experience fun, exciting and memorable, creating a foundation for future successful learning.
All Childfirst teachers are required to follow state regulations that apply to training. Our staff is trained in First Aid/CPR, Infectious Disease Control, Injury Prevention, and Child Abuse Awareness. Our staff also has additional training in curriculum, child development, classroom arrangement, classroom management, age appropriate activities, nutrition, field trip planning and OSHA regulations to ensure they possess the skills needed to create a quality learning environment.
All Childfirst lead teachers have a minimum of an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education, while most possess a Bachelor Degree in Education.

As a Non-profit 501c3 charitable organization, Childfirst recognizes the worth in building community. Childfirst practices a Servant Leadership model in business, as well as curriculum. It is through this model that we strive to have a positive impact on our community.
When we come into Childfirst in the morning, we are always greeted with a smile and a welcome by name. My daughter enjoys going to day care and seeing her friends and the wonderful teachers. She will be very ready for Kindergarten this fall. ~ Jaime F.
